Frequently Asked Questions
Family Photography
What is documentary family photography?
Documentary family photography focuses on real moments as they naturally unfold, rather than posed or heavily staged scenes. Instead of directing every movement, I photograph your family doing what you normally do—cooking, eating, playing, and spending time together at home.
Do you pose families during sessions?
Very minimally. I may offer gentle guidance if something isn’t working visually, but I won’t ask you to smile at the camera or recreate moments that don’t feel natural. The focus is on connection, movement, and real interaction.
Where do family sessions take place?
Family sessions typically take place in your home or another meaningful, everyday location. I’m especially drawn to kitchens, dining areas, and spaces where your family naturally gathers.
What should we do during a session?
Nothing out of the ordinary. Cooking a meal, baking, sharing a snack, playing, or simply being together are all perfect. You don’t need to plan anything elaborate—real life is exactly what I’m there to photograph.
Who is this style of photography best for?
This work is best for families who value authenticity over perfection and want photographs that feel more like artwork than traditional portraits. If you love images that feel honest, lived-in, and full of life, this approach is likely a great fit.
What if my house isn’t “photo-ready”?
That’s completely okay. I’m not looking for perfectly styled homes, just spaces that feel like yours. Everyday mess and imperfection are part of the story.
How many images will we receive?
Each session includes a curated gallery of fully edited images that best tell the story of your time together. Image counts vary by session type, and full details are shared during booking.
How do we book a session?
You can get in touch through the contact form on my site or by emailing me at hello@sodabreadstudio.com. From there, we’ll talk through your space, what you’d like to document, and which session option makes the most sense.
Food Business Photography
What kind of food businesses do you work with?
I work with bakeries, restaurants, cafés, and food brands that want imagery rooted in real process and people. My focus is on documenting how food is made, shared, and experienced.
How is documentary food photography different from traditional food photography?
Documentary food photography focuses on people, process, and place rather than perfectly styled dishes alone. It captures hands at work, kitchens in motion, and the environment surrounding the food, creating images that feel honest and human.
Do you style the food or set up scenes?
I work primarily in a documentary way, photographing food as it exists in real working environments. I may make small adjustments for light or composition, but I don’t create heavily styled or artificial scenes.
I do have backdrops and lighting for businesses interested in product shots for online ordering apps or other applications. If this is something you want to add to the shoot, let me know during the intake process and we’ll make it happen!
Where do food photography sessions take place?
Sessions typically take place on location—inside your restaurant, bakery, kitchen, or production space—during prep, service, or another meaningful moment in your workflow.
How can these images be used?
These images are well-suited for websites, social media, press, menus, and brand storytelling. They’re designed to show not just what your food looks like, but what it’s like to experience your space.
Do you understand the food industry?
Yes. I bring nearly a decade of experience in the food service world as a registered dietitian and marketing manager, which means I understand kitchen flow, operations, and the realities of working in food business environments.
How do we get started?
Reach out through the contact form on my site with a bit about your business and what you’re looking to capture. From there, we’ll talk through goals, timing, and the best approach for your business.
